About John Corcoran
California Law Report is published by John Corcoran, who has worked in Hollywood, at the White House, as a Speechwriter to the Governor of California, and is now an attorney and new Dad.
John first started writing content for the web before the term “blogging” had caught on — back in 1998. California Law Report began in an earlier incarnation in 2008.
Small Business Attorney
John is an attorney with the Corcoran Law Firm outside of San Francisco, where he helps entrepreneurs, business owners and real estate investors be successful.
John was a White House aide during the Clinton Administration and Speechwriter in the California Governor’s office during the Davis Administration.
Earlier in his career, John worked for a law firm in Silicon Valley, focusing on general civil litigation, small business representation, estate planning, employment law, and real estate law.
During this time, he represented numerous high-tech companies such as iPhone and web-based software developers in intellectual property disputes including trademark and copyright infringement actions.
He has also worked as a public affairs consultant, working with various private sector clients, political candidates, and local governments, including as a consultant to the County of Marin on the successful effort to establish the Marin Energy Authority.
The White House and Governor’s Office
Earlier in his career, John served in the White House during the Clinton Administration as a Writer in the Office of Presidential Letters and Messages.
He later served as a Speechwriter and Press Aide in the Office of the Governor in Sacramento during the Davis Administration, and as Senior Adviser to the Chair of the California State Board of Equalization (BOE).
During the California energy crisis, he was instrumental in the creation of the award-winning Flex Your Power energy conservation campaign.
Education
John is a graduate of the University of San Francisco School of Law, where he was a member of the USF Law Review, served on Honors Moot Court and received a CALI Award for Excellence in Legal Ethics.
During law school, John served as a law clerk in the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Marin County District Attorney, and with a large national civil law firm.
John graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1998 with a B.A. in English. During college, he participated in the UC Washington Center program and worked on the historic special election of Rep. Lois Capps.
John lives with his wife, Nicole, and their son Mason in Tiburon, where he serves as Chair of the Planning Commission for the Town of Tiburon.
